This is not the first time I have seen Sponge….this isn’t even the 10th them. Sponge is probably most known for their hit “Molly”, and often people wonder- “what ever happened to those guys?” Well, they’re still around; they never left and they’re better than ever! I went to 3 of their 4 area appearances this weekend, and as usual I was not disappointed. Thursday night brought us to Jerky’s in Providence, RI, which is upstairs from the former Club Babyhead, which is where I saw them about 15 years ago, for the very first time. They hit the stage at about midnight and played a short, but powerful 40 minute set. They stuck mainly to the hits.

Saturday night brought us to Mill Street Brews in Southbridge. It’s a big old mill for those of you not in the know. Sponge hit the stage with “Wax Ecstatic”, but tonight they had some surprises in store for us! They played crowd favorites “1000 Times” “Speed Racer”, “My Purity”, “My Lackluster Love” and “Velveteen” which in all the years of going to see them I don’t think I have ever heard played. I have to say this was the best set I’ve seen them play in a long time.

Front man Vinnie Dombroski has got to be one of the most enigmatic performers I have ever seen. He delivers each and sponge2 300x200 TWRY Tour Diary: Spongeevery song with every thing he has and he connects with the crowd and makes you feel like you’re the only one in the room. His is a dying breed, front men- take notes!!

This is the tightest I have seen this band in years. The recent addition of Bassist Tim Patalan, who joins his guitarist brother Andy, has been a good one. The band is rounded out with drummer Billy Adams and guitar player Kyle Neely who have both been with the band for quite some time now. While Vinnie is the only member from the original lineup, the current members give that version a run for their money.

Far too soon it was time to head home and get ready for Sunday, the last show at Mohegan Sun. Mohegan Sun’s Wolf’s Den hosts many free shows. Generally they seat you, not tonight, or should I say, they tried. The first words out of Vinnie’s mouth were telling us to get up front and you didn’t need to tell us twice, this was, after all, a rock show!

sponge3 TWRY Tour Diary: SpongeOnce again they put on a great show and threw in those rarely played gems like Rainin’, a personal favorite and “I Did it Without the Drugs”.  The guys stuck around and accommodated each and every fan who wanted a cd, t-shirt, picture or just to say hello; a great band and a great bunch of guys.

It was over far too soon and I can’t wait for them to come back. This is one band that leaves you wanting more.
