Concert Review + Photos: The Pretty Reckless at The Paradise in Boston, MA
A while ago, Spotify started pushing the Pretty Reckless on me in the recommendation section. Never listened to them, and I generally disregard Spotify recommendations. I’ve had a change of tune and now welcome our new machine overlords. Spotify was right, I love this band.
I’ve worked with these kind of algorithms in my day job, so let me take a second to talk about how cool this is. I had never heard of Taylor Momsen before. The Pretty Reckless frontwoman gained fame as an actress on the teen soap Gossip Girl. I’m a long way from being a teen, and I’m not a soap opera fan (human relationships scare and confuse me). Spotify doesn’t know about past lives. It just knows who listens to which songs and how often. That’s exactly the information that you need to make a recommendation. Anything else just clouds the issue. People can become fans for all sorts of reasons, but the most rabid fan isn’t going to listen to the music a lot if it sucks. The machine ignores all of the hype and just gets to the raw results.
The fans at the Paradise last Monday were in the same boat as me. They were there for the rock and roll star, and not the actress. Momsen has a grungy hard rock style with a stage presence to match. Dressed in tight pleather pants, she strutted around the stage whipping her long blond hair around and rubbing up against the other band members.1 Not a bad day on the job for me as a photographer. Make sure you check out the photos in the gallery below.
The Paradise doesn’t have a photo pit, so I was in the middle of the crowd with everyone else. When Momsen reached out from the stage there was a huge surge nearly knocking me off my feet. That’s not easy to do, I’m not a small guy. These fans were crazy and it was quite a rush.
The set contained a couple of new songs in addition to selections from 2010’s Light Me Up and 2012’s Hit Me Like a Man. These include the hard rocking “Follow Me Down”, “Fucked Up World”, and the title track from the upcoming album Going to Hell.
Momsen picked up the guitar during “My Medicine”, playing the signature four chord progression herself, which I thought was a nice touch. The only other time she touched an instrument was a tambourine during “Fucked Up World”. WTF, a little incongruous. The tambourine is such a happy instrument.
There wasn’t a huge amount of banter with the crowd. Momsen introduced a few of the songs with short notes while urging us to sing along.
Taylor Momsen puts on a sexy, hard rocking show. She’s got a spirited fan base that makes her performances a memorable experience. It’s hard to believe she played Cindy Lou Who in Jim Carrey’s The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. I wonder what the mayor would say?
1She can get away with it. If Mick Jagger tried it, it would just be weird.
