I had a “bad girlfriend” once. It’s not as fun as Tyler Connolly makes it sound in their 2008 hit of the same name. They played it to close off their show last Tuesday at the House of Blues in Boston. It reminded me why I like of lot of their stuff. They just don’t seem to give a crap if some people get offended at their lyrics, and that lets them explore less politically correct themes.

For example, early in the show Connolly gave a shout out to all the ladies in the audience, commenting on how they are a large part of the motivation behind being a rock performer. He then dedicated the next song to them, which was of course The Bitch Came Back.

Now, I don’t want to make it sound like their only purpose is to needle people with their lyrics. It’s not. (For a hilariously offensive band that does want to do that, see Steel Panther.) They just don’t mind going there. In fact, Connolly kind of wussed out later in the show by commenting that the Bitch Came Back dedication wasn’t very nice. They then broke into All or Nothing, one of their more female-friendly love songs. I will say that a lot of their more popular stuff is more in your face. The top five songs on Spotify are Bad Girlfriend, Hate My Life, Not Meant to Be, Bitch Came Back, and Drown.BN6V3338

They played four songs (out of a 16 song set) off the new album, Savages. These included two of my favorites, which you should check out online or elsewhere. Drown is an awesomely disturbing song about, well, drowning. Lots of unsettling imagery, prompting my wife to call it “gross.” High praise indeed. Blow is a more light-hearted commentary on some of the more screwed up aspects of today’s society.

As for my bad girlfriend, she is long gone, replaced by my beautiful wife of 20 years. (Yeah, that’s right. I can wuss out too.)
