Beastie Boys Member Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch Passes Away

May 4, 2012 by

File this one under the news we never wanted to report. Beastie Boys member Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch has reportedly passed away. GlobalGrind and TMZ broke the sad news.

Cause of death has not yet been confirmed but Yauch has been battling cancer since 2009 and recently had to miss the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The band’s last live performace was at Bonnaroo in 2009.

Yauch co-founded the legendary Beastie Boys in 1979 along with Ad Rock and Mike D, bending genres, blazing new trails and churning out albums like their 1986 debut ‘Licensed to Ill’ to 1998′s ‘Hello Nasty’ and their last disc 2011′s ‘Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.’

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Yauch’s family, friends, bandmates and of course fans. His contributions to the music community will live on.

Beastie Boys representative issued the following statement:

It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam “MCA” Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer. He was 47 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Yauch taught himself to play bass in high school, forming a band for his 17th birthday party that would later become known the world over as Beastie Boys.

With fellow members Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Adrock” Horovitz, Beastie Boys would go on to sell over 40 million records, release four #1 albums–including the first hip hop album ever to top the Billboard 200, the band’s 1986 debut full length, Licensed To Ill–win three Grammys, and the MTV Video Vanguard Lifetime Achievement award. Last month Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with Diamond and Horovitz reading an acceptance speech on behalf of Yauch, who was unable to attend.

In addition to his hand in creating such historic Beastie Boys albums as Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty and more, Yauch was a founder of the Milarepa Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness and  activism regarding the injustices perpetrated on native Tibetans by Chinese occupational government and military forces.  In 1996, Milarepa produced the first Tibetan Freedom Concert in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, which was attended by 100,000 people, making it the biggest benefit concert on U.S. soil since 1985′s Live Aid. The Tibetan Freedom Concert series would continue to stage some of the most significant benefit shows in the world for nearly a decade following in New York City, Washington DC, Tokyo, Sydney, Amsterdam, Taipei and other cities.

In the wake of September 11, 2001, Milarepa organized New Yorkers Against Violence, a benefit headlined by Beastie Boys at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, with net proceeds  disbursed to the New York Women’s Foundation Disaster Relief Fund and the New York Association for New Americans (NYANA) September 11th Fund for New Americans–each chosen for their efforts on behalf of 9/11 victims least likely to receive help from other sources.

Under the alias of Nathanial Hörnblowér, Yauch directed iconic Beastie Boys videos including  ”So Whatcha Want,” ”Intergalactic,” “Body Movin” and “Ch-Check It Out.” Under his own name, Yauch directed last year’s Fight For Your Right Revisited, an extended video for “Make Some Noise” from Beastie Boys’ Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, starring Elijah Wood, Danny McBride and Seth Rogen as the 1986 Beastie Boys, making their way through a half hour of cameo-studded misadventures before squaring off against Jack Black, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as Beastie Boys of the future.

Yauch’s passion and talent for filmmaking led to his founding of Oscilloscope Laboratories, which in 2008 released his directorial film debut, the basketball documentary Gunnin’ For That #1 Spot and has since become a major force in independent video distribution, amassing a catalogue of such acclaimed titles as Kelly Reichardt’s Wendy and Lucy,  Oren Moverman’s The Messenger,  Banksy’s Exit Through The Gift Shop, Lance Bangs and Spike Jonze’s Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait Of Maurice Sendak, and many more.

Yauch is survived by his wife Dechen and his daughter Tenzin Losel, as well as his parents Frances and Noel Yauch.

Check out all the details below and if you can’t make the show, you can also participate in auctions and special raffles or donate directly here.

Last December, our close community of friends, musicians, and music lovers lost one of its own when Lucinda Gallagher took her own life. Lucinda was kind and generous, and would give anything she had to anyone in need. She loved music, her friends and family, but more than anything in this world, her two amazing children. The children, now in the care of Lucinda’s dear friend Jamie, both have their mother’s rock and roll spirit. Like her, they are bright and soulful, and have a deep appreciation for music. Young teenagers, both are gifted budding musicians.

This benefit will include live shows on April 29th and 30th at the Bowery Electric, as well as an auction and raffle that will raise money to be put in trust for Lucinda’s children. All artists and persons involved have generously donated their time and talents, as well as items for auction and raffle. With the advisement of Bob Benjamin of the Light of Day charity and Alan Ross of Samaritans, we will ensure that almost all of the proceeds are placed into a trust for the children, with the only exception being a smaller portion being donated to our friends at Samaritans Of New York, who operate NYC’s 24 hour suicide prevention hotline, public education and suicide survivor support services. They are in turn providing support and aid in operating our benefit concert/auction and raffle.

Chad Stewart

You’ve seen him play drums for Faster Pussycat, and Tracii’s version of LA Guns, and with previous giver of Three Minutes, Gilby Clarke.

He also has his own band with Faster Pussycat bandmate Danny Nordahl, called Motochrist. (I personally have seen every of the previously named projects!)

He also has another new project in the works with former Alice Cooper guitarist Keri Kelli. I caught up with the extremely busy Chad at one of the NAMM after parties in Anaheim earlier this year, and he let us in on what he has been up to. Read more

Radio 92.9′s annual EarthFest will return to DCR’s Hatch Memorial Shell in Boston on May 19, 2012 with a killer (and totally free!) line-up that includes Third Eye Blind, The Spin Doctors, Switchfoot, and Eve 6.

For 19 years, the Radio 92.9 EarthFest has drawn crowds to the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell along the Charles River in Boston for this annual celebration for the Earth.  Presented by Whole Foods Market, the family-friendly festival is the largest free radio station concert in the country, showcasing national and local music acts, environmentally friendly products and local non-profit environmental organizations.

The music on the main stage will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a local band chosen through a contest hosted by Radio 92.9. Sixteen bands will be selected for the bracket and the final four will perform at an event in May. One band will be picked to play in front of thousands of people at Radio 92.9’s EarthFest. For more details or to enter a band in the contest, visit www.myradio92.9.com. Performances on the Kid’s Planet stage begin at 10:30am.

The Radio 92.9 EarthFest will also include music and activities in Kids’ Planet – an interactive area designed specifically with families in mind. The Kids’ Planet stage will feature performances from Mister G,   Sarah Wheeler & Little Groove, RhymeZweLL   Vanessa Trien & the Jumping Monkeys and student performers from Zumix.  The Kid’s Planet area will also feature environmental activities, educational displays and other activities planned for children under the age of 12.

“The diversity of the acts performing at this year’s event represent the type of music played by Boston’s rock station, Radio 92.9,” said Ken West, program director at Radio 92.9.  “Over the past 19 years, the Radio 92.9 EarthFest has established itself as a must-attend event.  We are fortunate to be able to work with the Department of Conservation and Recreation to host this celebration of the Earth in such a beautiful location.”

For more information about the 19th annual Radio 92.9 EarthFest, listen to Radio 92.9 FM or visit www.earthfest.com
