Ben Folds, Damian Kulash, Amanda Palmer & Neil Gaiman Team Up To Write & Record 8 Songs In 8 Hours For Rethink Music Conference

Talk about being put on the spot! Ben Folds, Damian Kulash (OK Go), Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls), and author Neil Gaiman will write and record eight songs in eight hours (4:00 p.m. to midnight) at Berklee College of Music, Monday, April 25, and release them 10 hours later during Rethink Music, in Boston. Like Radiohead did recently, this group will show how record companies are becoming superfluous to building buzz and distributing music.

The historic collaboration will be broadcast live from the recording studio at rethink-music.com. The album will then be released through Bandcamp.com; and proceeds from the first week of downloads will benefit Berklee City Music (providing free music education to underserved teens).

On April 12th & 13th Evelyn Evelyn made their stage debut at Oberon in Cambridge, MA.  The dates were a warm-up for their World Tour which, according to Amanda Palmer, will wind up back in Boston sometime this summer. (Date TBA)

If you are not familiar with Evelyn Evelyn, we suggest you check them out!  The brainchild of Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley, Evelyn Evelyn are a  songwriting duo performing original compositions on piano, ukulele, guitar and accordion. The sisters are conjoined twins – sharing three legs, two arms, three lungs, two hearts and a single liver.

The live show started off with solo sets from Jason Webley, Amanda Palmer and handler Sxip Shirey and then Sxip brought the girls out for their stage debut.

They may have fled the circus but their live performace was a theatrical carnival for the senses.  It’s hard not to get caught up in the tragic back story that Webley and Palmer have conjured up for the twins (losing both of their parents at a young age, spending the majority of their lives performing with the “Dillard & Fullerton’s Illusive Traveling Show”).  The twins evoke a certain sadness that penetrates through to the soul that only gets stronger when they sit down at the keyboard and play songs from their debut album.  The sold out crowd was fully immersed in the show that was facilitated hastily by the duo’s handler Sxip Shirey.

It goes without saying that the duo’s creators have received some flack and have been accused of exploiting a disability with this new project but I think anyone who takes the time to dig a little deeper will understand that it’s more of a celebration of the beauty of the differences in all of us.  Although their music often gets pushed behind their larger than life premise, Evelyn Evelyn spin an intricate web of storytelling tales that jump from genre to genre with ease.
