November 2012 saw the release of a project more than 8 years in the making: Lila, The Divine Game by Matthew Leone was published. It’s the story, philosophies, and message the band Madina Lake–for which Matthew plays bass guitar–built their entire career around. Finally, sense was made of the clues hidden in the artwork, lyrics, videos, and stage performances of the band’s 3 full-length albums, From Them, Through Us, To You (2007, Roadrunner Records), Attics To Eden, (2009, Roadrunner Records), and WWIII (2011, Razor & Tie). Less than 6 months later, the band shocked and saddened their worldwide fanbase by announcing their final tour. Just a couple days after that, drummer Dan Torelli dropped a figurative atomic bomb–he would not be joining the band on that tour–and “WWIII” was over. Madina Lake, as we knew them for the last 8 years, was over…
In every tragedy there can be triumph; in every negative, a positive hides, waiting to be found. This is something Madina Lake has always stressed to their fans, not just through their music, but through their personal lives, as well. Medically speaking, remember, Matthew Leone shouldn’t even be alive right now.
But alive, he is, and doing very well! He joins TWRY today to help shine some light into the recent darkness that has fallen on his beloved band, town, and River People (fans).

Last month we brought you the sad news about Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone. Since then, the music community has come together to show their support and now The Smashing Pumpkins have announced that they will perform a benefit concert next Tuesday, July 27 at Chicago’s Metro to raise money for medical care for Matthew.
If you missed the details about Matthew Leone, he was hospitalized with severe brain trauma after intervening to stop a woman he passed on the street from being beaten by her husband. Matthew had left twin brother Nathan’s Chicago apartment to meet a friend at a bar a few blocks away when he walked past the man beating his wife on the 1300th block of Ohio St. Even though the attacker was twice his size, Matthew immediately intervened and managed to subdue the attacker but as he waited for police to arrive, the attacker suddenly turned on Matthew, beating him severely. He then walked away with his wife, leaving Matthew unconscious on the street. Matthew was taken to UIC Hospital for emergency brain surgery wherein a third of his skull was removed to alleviate swelling. He’s currently in stable condition awaiting an additional brain surgery to reapply the removed portion of his skull. Alleged suspect Justin Pivec is currently charged with Aggravated Battery Causing Serious Bodily Harm and out on bail pending a forthcoming hearing. As a musician, Matthew spends most of his life on tour and unfortunately his medical insurance had lapsed just two months prior to the incident. Friends of the band and the Chicago music community are rallying to help provide for Matthew’s medical needs.
There will be a raffle for tickets for the benefit show. Individuals can enter the raffle as many times as they wish for $10 each entry. A majority of the venue will be sold to raffle winners. Each winner will receive two tickets to the concert. Tickets are not transferable and winners must show ID matching their raffle entry. Raffle tickets will be available for sale through Metro website only beginning Wednesday July 21 at noon at http://www.metrochicago.com. The raffle will end at 2pm on Saturday July 24, 2010, and winners will be notified via email at 5pm on Saturday July 24, 2010. http://www.metrochicago.com.
All proceeds from the raffle and concert will go to the Matthew Leone Fund at Sweet Relief. Sweet Relief Musicians Fund is a non profit 501(c)(3) organization provides financial assistance to all types of career musicians who are struggling to make ends meet while facing illness, disability, or age-related problems. According to a sad blog entry on Nathan Leone’s website, his twin brother and Madina Lake bandmate Matthew is in the hospital after trying to help a woman in need and being attacked. Here’s the entry:
Suffering a massive shock …
i’m afraid I have some of the worst news that has ever hit our lives. It’s almost impossible to even type this update. A few nights ago, Matthew walked from my apt. a block and a half down the street to meet a friend for a drink. half way there he saw a man severely beating his wife. Being the most amazing, strong, heroic and incredible person I know.. even though the guy was twice his size, Matthew intervened. He managed to subdue this guy for a second and since his wife was beat up pretty good called the cops.. as he did so the guy jumped him from behind and beat him. This guy did things I can’t even type. After words, he and his beaten wife left Matthew unconcious on the street. Matthew is in the hospital with a third of his skull removed as we wait for the swelling in his brain to go down. I’d rather not share any additional information at this time besides the fact that he acted as a hero (as he always would in any of these situations) and is paying a horrific price. Pease send all your love and good energy and vibrations to him. I’ve been and will be next to him throughout the entire recovery process. We don’t know enough yet details about how that will develop.. but it has shocked, stunned, disgusted our best friends, family and band (which are both). The world can be evil beyond belief and as much as we want this evil eliminated, right now our hearts heads and energies need to go to my best friend, soul mate, hero, and angel, Matthew. Love you all and will be in touch as soon as I can muster up the emotional energy to reach out again. Please, be safe and peaceful as we get through this impossible time.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Matthew, Nathan, and their entire family.
