Dan Fila of Varga
Interviewed by: Roger Scales
Dan could we get a quick lesson on the history of Varga for metal fans that may be not quite familiar with the band?
It was founded in 1989 by bassist/vocalist Joe Varga and myself (drummer Dan Fila). We had been friends since elementary school. Joe and I started our first band together in grade 7 and we called it “The Golden Phoenix”. Our first gig we stole shopping carts and brought all of our equipment to school in shopping carts. Adam (Alex-guitars) joined the band by grade 9. Sean (Williamson-guitars) joined a few years later. Read more

Mayhem Fest stampeded its way into the Comcast Center in Mansfield, MA on July 22 for what would prove to be a long sweaty day of metal and mosh pits.
Metalcore thrash masters Trivium are set to release their new album In Waves on Augusth 9th and vocalist/guitarist Matt Heafy had this to say about it ” There’s no question about it, in our eyes, that this is the most complete project we’ve ever done. We think we’ve finally made the record that we’ve always strived to make.”
TWRY photographer Jamie Ivins was on hand to capture it all, check out his gallery of Trivium’s set below! Mayhem Festival continues through mid August. Check out their website for remaining dates and ticket info!

Russell Allen of Symphony X
May 4, 2011 by TWRY Staff
Filed under 80s Guy For The Modern Eye, Interviews
On June 21st Symphony X will release their eighth studio release titled Iconoclast, their first release since 2007’s Paradise Lost. Iconoclast is being referred to as the band’s manifesto “a commanding declaration of an inventive blend of classic rock, straightforward heavy metal and ambitious prog.” That seems like a lot to live up to but if anyone can deliver, leave it to Symphony X.
The band is currently out on a short tour run and I got to catch up with “Sir” Russell Allen before their show in Worcester, MA at The Palladium. We talked about Iconoclast, their new relationship with Nuclear Blast, side projects with Mike Portnoy and the one question I couldn’ t leave without asking…how does one become a “Sir”?

Maria Brink of In This Moment
February 7, 2011 by Mary Ouellette
Few have been able to harness the delicate balance between aggression and melody quite like In This Moment. With their third release A Star-Crossed Wasteland the band has truly defined their sound – an emotional assault of the senses mixing the beauty of melodic softness with the grunge and grittiness of metal; no one seems to do it better.
Looking at In This Moment’s leading lady Maria Brink from the outside, few would expect the baby-doll dress adorned, tattooed, blonde haired maven to open up and let out some of her signature growls, but Brink has proved through music that there’s a lot more than meets the eye.
Brink along with founding member and guitarist Chris Howarth, Blake Bunzel on rhythm guitar, Jeff Fabb on drums and Travis Johnson on bass are currently out as part of the Music As A Weapon Tour alongside Korn, Disturbed and Sevendust, ITM’s Maria Brink took some time to fill us in on the tour, their latest album, and her advice to blooming metal goddesses.
