Reviewed by: Roger Scales

What’s so cool about this book right from the first grab is its size:  “9 ½ x 11 ¼” with thick stock pages and full color (many rare unseen) photos covering the band’s entire history from its earliest stages formed in Los Angeles in 1981 right up to 2013.  Its 192 pages of pure history, stories and reviews of each Metallica release right up to 2011’s “Lulu”.

The reviews of each record are covered by some of the top rock journalists in the business. Mick Wall, Andre Earles, Gary Graff and others give their takes on each release from the hits to the misfires and nothing is held back.  But after all this is an illustrated history so the text is almost secondary to the photos themselves which make the book worth its price alone.

Each era of the band is covered right from Mustaine to Burton right on down to Newsted and Trujillo.  Plenty for every Metallica fan to enjoy with no real emphasis on one particular era but rather a chronological look of how Metallica became the biggest metal band in the world and continues to be to this day. As with the Rush book I reviewed a few months back, what makes this history standout from the rest is the sick collection of memorabilia on display throughout the pages of this book. T-shirts, gig posters, flyers, rare albums, backstage passes, concert tickets, patches and more flood the pages and make even the diehard fan stand up and take notice.

What I admire about Popoff and his unique style is that he uses his own interviews conducted over the years and does not rely on quotes from other writers.  There are other Metallica books out there with longer more in-depth coverage of the band but none combine the amount of quality rare photos of the band live and in the studio with band collectibles combined with a list of the entire Metallica canon-every album, single, ep and video.  At over 300 images, countless hours must have been spent selecting images that nobody had seen in years if ever at all.

This book will definitely make a great holiday treat for that metal fan in your life, a grab or secret Santa at work or better yet spoil yourself and pick one up as a stocking stuffer.  Just make sure that your rock stocking has some extra stuffing because this book is heavy and not just the physical product but a history one of the great metal bands of all time makes it a heavy metal history for the ages.

Metallica Announce 30th Anniversary Shows

In honor of their 30th anniversary Metallica has announced four special shows for their fan club members.  The band will invade the Fillmore in San Francisco on December 5, 7, 9, and 10th.  According to the band, the intimate shows will include special guests, different set lists each night and rarities.  You can read all about it straight from the horses mouth below:

From Metallica.com:

Thirty years of Metallica… can you believe it? We think it’s cause for a major celebration! You’ve been asking for a while now “just what the hell are you going to do to mark 30 years as a band?” closely followed by “why don’t we have more exclusive shows for Fan Club members?” We’ve heard you loud and clear and are beyond psyched to announce that the week of December 5, 2011 will be a full on Metallica week in the Bay Area, more specifically we will be playing four shows for Met Club members only at the historic Fillmore in San Francisco on December 5, 7, 9, and 10 to celebrate our 30th anniversary. These unique shows will include special guests and events, rare songs, varied set lists, odds and ends, and all the nutty stuff you expect from Metallica… fun for the entire family! Come to the Bay Area and spend the week with us to not only close out 2011 out with a bang, but to celebrate over three decades worth of craziness.

Participate in the entire week of festivities with special four pack tickets (one ticket for each of the four shows) and automatic entry into the contests for various other special events, available for the clever price of $19.81 (get it??). If you can’t join us for the full week, we’ll have individual show tickets too and as you can see we’re going back to early ’80′s ticket pricing (but not the hair!)… single show tickets will be just $6.00 each. Both four packs and individual show tickets will be available for Fan Club members only through a reservation system and we do have to add facility fees, blah, blah. Clubbers can log in for all the details… we’re taking reservations through August 8.

Hope to see you for a week of madness in December!

Oh and never fear East Coast, we’re not out of this yet! Metallica’s Lars Ulrich told RollingStone.com that more U.S. “Big Four” dates are possible. “We are looking to book something on the East Coast because of the success of this — it should hopefully come together in a week or two,” Ulrich said. “Maybe we’ll do somewhere in the Midwest and South, too. Still, I don’t think it will turn into a 40-date arena tour; that would make it less special. I like the fact that there’s an element of chaos to the whole thing. It shouldn’t be sterile, streamlined and perfect: it needs an edgy underbelly to remain authentic.”
