Is Aerosmith Really Aerosmith Without Steven Tyler?

You may have noticed that we haven’t been too quick to jump on any of the news items about Aerosmith auditioning for new singers.   Probably because we’re biased and find it really hard to even say the name Aeorsmith without thinking of Steven Tyler.

There’s been speculation that after Tyler’s drug rehab he’ll need a couple of surgeries that will put him out of the game for about a year and a half.  Is the world really going to forget Aerosmith if they hang it up for a year or two?  Is it fair for the band to have to wait that long to move on?  Is two years really that big of a stretch for a band that’s been rocking out for over forty years?  All good questions but I think it’s safe to say that if Aerosmith were to lay low for a few years, no one would forget about them.  Besides, who doesn’t love a good comeback story?

If one were to dig back into the archives of epic rock bands that decided to move forward without the lead singer that helped put them on the map, what would one see?  The formidable argument of Dave vs. Sammy still seems to arouse the passion in rock enthusiasts  but are there really a lot of dynamic frontmen out there looking for gigs that would be able to fill the bedazzled shoes of one said Steven Tyler? We’re finding it hard to even think of one.  Maybe there’s an unknown, untapped natural talent out there singing in a Aerosmith cover band who’s been dreaming of this moment all of his life?  Maybe we’ll find him on YouTube singing Dream On  in his native tongue? We doubt it.

Let us be very clear. We love Joe Perry.  We love his solo projects.  We’ve always supported him in all of his ventures.  Speaking of those ventures – shouldn’t that be enough to keep him busy for the next year or two while the band waits for Tyler?  Don’t you have hot sauces to oversee?  Rockband games to play?  Guitar Hero songs to track?  Do the Toxic twins ever even talk anymore?  What’s with this communication breakdown?  Rather than reading little post show quotes about replacing Tyler or watching YouTube clips of Tyler showing up uninvited to Joe Perry’s solo gigs, what I’d really like is to throw these two in a room and force them to work out their differences with each other, rather than through press.  If the conclusion is that you can no longer work together…then we’ll respect that.  We won’t like it, but we’ll deal…

Until then.. if you want to find out where you can audition to be the next Aerosmith singer, you won’t find it here.  We’ll be in the corner listening to Toys In The Attic…..

Share your thoughts with us on this topic!  Should Aerosmith stick it out and wait for Tyler?  Do they deserve to move on without him?  Do you think there’s a place for Aerosmith in today’s music scene?  Are you too young to even know who Aerosmith is?  Do you think Aerosmith sold out years ago?  Tell us……..
