With the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival kicking off this weekend in California, one person was sorely missing when Slipknot hit the stage. Guitarist Jim Root suffered a burst appendix, forcing him into the hospital and missing a few dates.
Here’s the statement from the band regarding the situation:
“We’re sorry to announce that our brother, Jim Root, will not be performing with us at Mayhem today in San Bernardino due to serious health issues. Jim has been seriously sick for the past two weeks and went to the hospital last week where he was advised that his appendix burst a couple weeks before and that it could have been life threatening. Jim is at home recovering and is awaiting surgery to have pieces of his appendix removed and hopes to join the tour as soon as he is able.
“Slipknot will continue to headline the Mayhem Festival and all other shows. We refuse to let our fans down and will not miss a single date. We will miss Jim greatly and our thoughts are with him. Jim sends his love to each and every one of our fans.

Nine years ago, Corey Taylor spent his birthday in Poughkeepsie, NY. on stage with his “new” band Stone Sour. Emerging from the imposing musical shadow of Slipknot, Stone Sour had a raw newness that was exciting to watch. Stone Sour’s sound, although heavy, called on Corey to be much more of a melodic singer and as strange as it was to see two of Slipknot’s members performing unmasked it was even stranger to hear Corey sing! The first annual Avalanche Tour (featuring The Art of Dying, Halestorm, Theory of a Deadman, Skillet and headliners Stone Sour) is heading into it’s last week and the wear is starting to show – not in spirit though. A visibly ill Corey Taylor took the stage with Stone Sour only to greet the crowd with the news that he wasn’t feeling very well. Luckily, before anyone had a chance to get too worried, Taylor assured his loyal fans that there was nothing that could keep him from the stage that night and proceeded to tear the roof off of the place. Ain’t that just rock n’ roll.
Calling the May 1st Uncasville, CT stop the largest show on the tour to date Stone Sour powered through their set featuring music from their latest release Audio Secrecy and peppered with older favorites with a few soft spots set aside for the duo of Taylor and his guitar. If he hadn’t told us he was sick it would have been hard to tell from the level of energy he offered up.
Avalanche Tour continues through May 8th and is pretty much a steal for any rock fan. You get five bands on one bill and that’s a lotta bang for your buck! Check out the remaining dates here.

On September 29th, the Slipknot camp will release their new DVD (sic)nesses. The DVD captures their June 2009 appearance at Download Festival in front of 80,000 fans. 30 cameras were on hand to capture every possible angle of the band as they motored through their parade of hits; the cameras also caught the fans on tape, as they are just as crucial an element of a Slipknot show as the band members themselves.
Perhaps most importantly, (sic)nesses is one of the final major performances for founding member Paul Gray, who tragically passed away in May 2010. While initially unintended, the concert is a testament to the legacy of Gray, where fans can enjoy a lasting glimpse of the bassist doing what he loved most.
Additionally, the DVD also includes a 45-minute behind the scenes documentary created by band percussionist Clown, as well as all four music videos from the All Hope Is Gone cycle.
